Katie Paterson's Iceland Project

Listen to global warming in action. Starting April 1st you will be able to listen to the effects of global warming. London-based artist, Katie Paterson, is setting up a Dolphinear DE500 hydrophone system at the Jokulsarlon glacier lake on the south coast of Iceland. This lake is fed by melting ice from the Vatnajokull glacier shown in the photo.

This project was developed to emphasise the 'immediacy' of global climate change which, too often, appears 'disconnected' from our daily lives. We see pictures in magazines, read articles, and watch TV programs about climate change and melting glaciers. But, these are removed from our everyday experience.

Between 1 April and 1 June 2008, you will be able to hear, feel and experience this in real time. Callers simply use their own landline telephones, or mobiles, to access the glacier.

There are no recordings, no explanations, just the sounds of melting ice, shifting icebergs, wind, rain, and perhaps the occasional fish or seal. This is meant to be a PERSONAL experience.

Ms. Paterson has gone to a remote section of the Jokulsarlon glacier lake at the base of the Vatnajokull Glacier on Iceland's south coast. There she set up a portable DolphinEar hydrophone system that is linked to a mobile telephone.

The telephone hookup will be available from 24 hours/day each day. We ask that you limit your calls to no more than 5 minutes each hour to give as many people as possible a chance to experience this once in a lifetime event.

To listen to the glacier, dial one of these numbers*:

From UK: 07757 001122

From Outside UK: +44 7757 001122

Click on the 'Diary Page' link at the bottom of the page to see photos and hear recordings of the glacier.

You can E-mail Katie Paterson at: glacier@danxtel.com

*Costs will be billed to your telephone based on the rates to UK mobile telephones. The connection charges between the UK and Iceland are being paid for by Virgin Mobile, one of the sponsors of this project. Plus, any profits made by Virgin from your call are being donated to charity. No money is being made by any of the project sponsors from your calls.

Project Sponsors: Dolphinear.com, Virgin Mobile, Iceland Express Airways.
